Movie is typical Sundar Mass entertainer, fun if you want a masala movie. Nothing much to say other than Anuya's kiss and she is continuing her good acting after SMS and Madurai Sambavam.

Rediff Nagaram Watch Tamil Movie Online Review

After starring in a string of rather lewd comedies, it looks like Sundar C is back to a more serious version of one of his favourite themes: the gangster with the heart of gold who tries to save everyone around him.

And this time around, in Avni Cinemax's (wife Khushboo's home production) Nagaram (City), he dons several roles: that of hero, director and screenplay writer. He's even managed to complete some of these tasks reasonably well.

It's a relief to see him start out in something other than either a lewd, or a cinematic entrance: the first glimpse we have of him, literally, is lying on a stretcher glucose bottle dangling over him, staring longingly at the image of a child on a pharmacy's billboard.

And so we enter the murky past of Elephantgate, aka Gate Selvam (Sundar C), courtesy his usual unruly crop of hair and scraggly beard, as he arrives in city, fresh from prison, helped out by his dearest friend, Inspector Sakkarai Pandi (Bose Venkat). The man may have been a devil in the past, but now he's ready to turn over a new leaf. Problem is, no one will let him. Life gets even more complicated when he catches sight of Bharathi (Anuya), a pretty group dancer in cinema, who has her own share of problems, complete with a broken home.

Like in real life, a small incident balloons into bigger problems, as Selvam tries to balance honesty with betrayal, friends and his foes, until everything bleeds into a cat and mouse game for his survival. And bang in the middle of it is Style Pandi (Vadivel), whose comic antics sometime hit the right mark, and falters at others.

While the role itself might not be all that different, Sundar C has done his best to weed out punch dialogues, flashy fights and silly scenes in this movie most of the time. He still can't quite keep away from the random lewd overtone, but he does show that he means business. It would have worked better if he could have wrung out some expression in his face during the intense scenes. Still, it's a far better performance than what's usually expected from him.

Anuya is surprisingly not relegated to the sidelines, and does a neat job. Even the so-called kiss that raised a ruckus has been handled well, fitting with the sequence.

Vadivelu manages to skate through his scenes while the rest of the cast (comprising mostly of large villains), add the requisite depth to the proceedings.

Chelladurai's camera-work does quite a few visual acrobatics, while Thaman's music fits the bill without being obtrusive.

The endless gang war sequences, filled with unruly men can get a bit tedious, while the screenplay takes its own sweet time to get to the end. The editing scissors could have been put to good use.

Nagaram is worth a watch, just to see Sundar C in a different avatar.

Cinefundas Nagaram Watch Tamil Movie Online Review

Last time, we saw Sundar C under the credits of direction was in 2006 for the film ‘Rendu’. After a long sabbatical gap of 4 years, he is back wearing the Director’s Hat for this film ‘Nagaram’. ‘Thalai Nagaram’ dealt with a roughneck on the roads of transformation, but is suppressed by the society. Again, ‘Nagaram’ is one such flick that deals with friendship and betrayals. To be precise, the film is an exact replica of yesteryear Hollywood movie ‘Carlito’s Way’. Starring superstars like Al Pacino and Sean Penn in lead roles, the film proved to be an extraordinary showpiece that had the right mix of action and romance.

The story of ‘Nagaram’ is exactly the same as it revolves around Selvam (Sundar C), who decides to lead a good life giving up his criminal activities. He is offered a job by his boss Bhai (G Srinivasan) at Hyderabad. Tending to start a new life ahead, he comes across a dancer Bharathi (Anuya) and falls in love with her. When they decide to get married, Selvam is dragged by his past and is wedged between serious situations of helping his friend-police officer Sakkara Pandi (Bose Venkat). But sooner when the true colors are revealed his very own life at stake. Will he save himself from the clutches of fate or not forms crux of the story…

Sundar.C, could have mentioned a byline of Hollywood’s inspiration as it would have gained him appreciations. But again sticking to theft of plot, it’s nothing there to praise him. All that he has afforded is of blending the commercial elements of fun, romance, glamour and action to the tale. On the positive side, Sundar C has underplayed his role keeping far away from those heroisms that were prevalent in his previous movies. It’s best if he can exert the same performances in his future movies as well. Anuya is too choosy with her scripts, but goes for the ones that offer substantial roles. Of course, she is just 3-films old, but strikes with a spectacular show. Be the glamorous quotients or the emotions to the extremum, she is at best. Vadivelu doesn’t get more footage as in his previous film ‘Thalainagaram’ with Sundar C. He brings a heavy-dosed laughter with his comedy tracks. Unlike ‘Thalainagaram’, most of his portions appear in parallel track. Veteran actor G. Srinivasan makes an impressive performance and Bose Venkat is okay.

The lengthy duration is a big drawback as certain unwanted elements drag the film. After a particular extent, we are dragged by the uninteresting moments, especially in the second half.  The point where the true colors of Bose Venkat are revealed, the proceedings become completely unpredictable.

Technically, couple of songs by Thamman sounds good while the background score is so loud and harsh with unwanted percussions. Cinematography is okay as Chelladurai tries cranking some naturalistic shots without the over usage of filters.

‘Nagaram’ will cater precisely for the ‘B’ and ‘C’ centres as these audiences have always been the target audiences of Sundar C.

Tamilvix Nagaram Watch Tamil Movie Online Review

Sundar C seems to have started from where he left in ‘Thalainagaram’. Quite like his maiden heroic venture, ‘Nagaram’ too is a story of a convict, who wants to live a reformed life, but forced to go back to his old ways.

Movies directed by Sundar C always had good mix of all commercial ingredients. So is ‘Nagaram’ with comedy, romance and action. Though it is more similar to ‘Thalainagaram’, the scene is set in a different place here.

Sundar, who has directed the film besides playing the lead role, has captured the functioning of underworld operating in Chennai, mafia that controls harbour and fishing hamlets, in a vivid way. He has handled a huge star cast and the film moves at a fairly interesting pace.

Gate Selvam (Sundar C) is stabbed and is struggling for life. In the hospital bleeding profusely he recalls his past. He is convicted for a crime and is sentenced to five years imprisonment.

A senior police officer Sakkarai Pandi (Bose Venkat), who is also Selvam’s childhood friend, helps him come out of the prison. The jail life brings a change in his life and Selvam decides to earn in right way and lead a peaceful life.

But the society is not willing to allow him to do so. Specially his friend Sakkarai Pandi in the pretext of friendship uses him for all his unlawful activities. Selvam comes across Bharathy (Anuya), a junior film artiste. Coming to know about her life and her courteous nature, Selvam falls for her.

Meanwhile, Sakkarai Pandi incurs the wrath of Kadhar Bhai (Sreenivasan) for trying to take away huge haul of ganja from him. It’s now cat and mouse game between Sakkarai Pandi and the gang.

Selvam goes hammer and tong to help save his friend. But when he comes to know the true nature of his friend, all things go awry. What happens in Selvam’s life after that forms the climax.

Sundar C plays the role with consummate ease. He is good at romance and action sequences. Anuya is tailor-made for the character. Sreenivasan revels as baddie, while Bose Venkat does his part well.

Vadivelu as Style Pandi, in a separate comedy track, evokes laughter. George, Vichu, Ponnambalam, Besant Ravi and Nalini also form part of the cast. Music by Thaman is foot-tapping. But the loud re-recording could have been avoided. Thalapathy Dinesh’s stunts deserve special mention.

Produced by Kushboo Sundar, ‘Nagaram’ is bit lengthy in the second half. It’s a new wine in an old bottle. But the taste is good, however.
