Tamil film industry is expanding its territory across various regions. Superstar Rajnikanth starrer Endhiran's success in both Hindi and Telugu versions, has paved way for other film-makers to dub their films in these languages. It is confirmed that Surya’s upcoming film Ezham Arivu will be dubbed in Telugu and Hindi as well.

This is mainly because the entire crew has become more popular across Telugu and Hindi film industries. Surya has hogged the limelight in his debut Hindi film
Rakta Charitra and Shruti Hassan has already become a popular name. Sources also say that AR Murugadoss’ overnight success with Aamir Khan’s Ghajini has been the deciding factors for the director to dub Ezham Arivu in Hindi.

Now it’s turn of Kamal Hassan to get his upcoming film Manmadhan Ambu dubbed in Hindi and Telugu. The film’s producer Udhayanidhi Stalin has decided this film because of the star-values. Kamal Haasan has huge fans following him across the nation, while Madhavan and Trisha have carved a niche for themselves in Bollywood and Tollywood.

The shooting of the film has been completed and Udhayanidhi Stalin is reported of spending nearly Rs.20 crores for the marketing and publicity campaigns. The film is directed by KS Ravikumar and Kamal has handled story, screenplay and dialogues.

After a fun-filled three days on the cruise Superstar Virgo, where the cast and crew were treated to performances, food etc. from across the globe, the people responsible for acting and making the Golden Arrow of Kollywood landed in Singapore on Saturday, 20th November, 2010. The audio launch was planned at the Singapore Expo where, approximately, 8000 people were estimated to watch the function live. The program was sponsored by Vijay TV and hence had Mano and Chitra participate with the ‘junior singers’ and artists from the "Who is the next Prabhu Deva" show.

The launch function, which entertained people for nearly 3 1/2 hours, was hosted by Vijay TV fame Gopinath and DD. Though the list of invitees was limited to Manmadhan Ambu's team, it was an evening to remember, nonetheless. The mood was relaxed and upbeat and who better than KS Ravikumar and Kamal Haasan to liven up everyone's spirits. Though there weren't any prominent speeches from anyone, it was the little humour anecdotes from Kamal and others that had everyone in splits.

Trisha, who usually does not speak or spend much time on stage other than dancing, did not hide her excitement when she was on stage cheered by everyone. More than just appearing on stage, she was asked to sing a song alongside Kamal (Kamal Kavithai). When asked about her performance, a blushing Trisha said that the credit goes to Kamal as he was the one who persuaded her for her stage act. Informing that this was her first ever stage act, Trisha said that she had said ‘No’ to Kamal sir more than 1000 times but still he persuaded her to sing with him. "Please ask Kamal sir if you have any questions about my performance", she said smilingly.

Kamal shed 30 years of his life and was as enthusiastic as a man in his late 20s. Occasionally barging into others' speeches, he spiced up the whole evening with his wit and humour. One such incident was when Gopinath was heaping superlatives after another on Kamal Haasan when calling him on stage. Kamal immediately asked Gopinath to stop and said, "I think I will start believing in whatever you say" for which Gopinath replied, "Sir this is one of the very few chances we get to appreciate you. You deserve every praise”.

Kamal Haasan in one word

Ramesh Aravind was a man of few words. When asked to describe Kamal Haasan in one word, Ramesh Aravind thought and thought and thought and finally said that it was too difficult to contain Kamal in one word. He said that he can talk about Kamal all day long but if there is one word he has to use, he would say 'Inspiration'. The reason he said was that Kamal has been a source of inspiration for so many people to enter the cinema industry.

The film's producer Udhayanidhi Stalin was not in a mood to talk for long either. He made his speech short and crisp by saying that Kamal is like God to many. "He is the reason for me venturing into cinema", he said to a thundering applause.

Dum pudichi ennala paada mudiyathu..

The most-awaited part of the evening was Kamal's performance and he did not disappoint. Kamal and Trisha, together, sang and recited 'Kamal Kavithai' and Kamal also sang one more song to a spell-bound audience.

While Suchitra sang to Oyyale, Andrea crooned to 'Who is the hero'. Her voice and control even in high-pitch sequences raised everyone's eyebrows. Appreciating Andrea's performance, Kamal quipped "I cannot sing like Andrea at all. Ennala avlo dum pudichi paada mudiyathu (I can't sing holding my breath for so long)".

The trailer and audio launch

The trailer of Manmadhan Ambu was screened to the audience and got tremendous reception. The bull-ring sequence was the talking point of the evening.

The audio launch was a never-been-done-before event. If we thought launching in Singapore was the highlight, the way in which the audio was released would be remembered by many for a very long time. When the time was ripe to release the CD, KS Ravikumar called Trisha and Madhavan to invite men and women from the public who had gathered. In an unusual incident, residents and fans of Singapore found themselves on stage with the’ man’ himself.

While Kamal distributed the first copies to the men present, Trisha gave it to the women on stage. It was so heartening to see this wonderful gesture. KS Ravikumar informed the gathering that it was Kamal's idea to release the CD to the public rather than giving it to the crew members. "This is the first time in the history of Tamil cinema such thing has happened and all the credit goes to Kamal for this excellent idea", praised Ravikumar.

Manmadhan Ambu has the 'matter'

Can KS Ravikumar be hidden in such a grand ceremony? Not at all, as he was in his usual self addressing the 8000-odd crowd. He had everyone in splits with his one-liners and statements. Talking about Manmadhan Ambu, he said that it has all the ingredients and necessary 'matter' in it making everyone present to applaud and laugh for atleast a minute. "It will be an entertaining and enterprising movie with the usual KS Ravikumar stamp", he assured. He thanked each and every member of the crew and also gave a special note of thanks to dance master Sagar. Revealing that Kamal does not appreciate and approve anyone so easily, he said that music director Devi Sree Prasad has a very bright future as Kamal had personally told his admiration for DSP's music.

Gowthami is not on a picnic

Referring to Gowthami, who also attended the function, KSR told that she is not on a picnic. "Gowthami is the costume designer of the movie and is responsible to show Kamal as a young lad", said Ravikumar. He also told that he was impressed with her costume designs in Dasavatharam. He added that he was stuck in awe when he met Kamal two weeks after he narrated the script. A surprised KSR said, "I could not believe he was Kamal as he had lost so much weight".

Yaavarum Kelir

Talking about Yaavarum Kelir, the project which was announced earlier by Kamal, Ravikumar said that Yaavarum Kelir got shelved due to non availability of dates. "It is a project which will take atleast 1 1/2 years to complete. But since Kamal only had 6-8 months of his time, we decided on Manmadhan Ambu. “I'm sure Kamal will make Yaavarum Kelir soon", Ravikumar assured.

One of a kind

This is the first time that two major TV channels joined hands to present an audio launch. Vasantham Tamil Central, a popular Tamil channel in Singapore, and Vijay TV collaborated to present the audio release to viewers. We hope that this culture will also emanate in India, murmured a few.

The gala function was attended by the film's cast and crew which included Ramesh Aravind, director KS Ravikumar, Udhayanidhi Stalin, Mrs. Kiruthika Stalin, Gowthami, singers Andrea, Suchitra along with Kamal Haasan, Madhavan, Trisha, Sangeetha and music director Devi Sree Prasad.

Tamil Movie Releases in December

December has always been a pretty dull and slow month as far as film buffs are concerned; at least down south. It is the time for the post-Diwali slump and the pre-Pongal lull. It is only very rarely that we get to see major releases during the final month of the year; the last couple of weeks always looking very deserted. There are a couple of industries in India; Bollywood and Malayalam, which reserve at least a couple of big ones for the Christmas weekend. But, the Tamil film industry has always been reluctant to open up during this period. It perhaps may have a lot to do with the fact that big flicks desire to get hold of the more festive Pongal week. The corresponding part of the year holds no great celebration in the North or Kerala which is why perhaps they give out their
  Kamal Haasan

big flicks for Christmas without holding them back for New Year.

Over the last couple of years, December has given the odd big release, but nothing big enough to buck the trend of the month being slow for theatrical business. Last year, we had Vettaikaran in December and before that one can recall Billa, released in 2007, being a major December release. But, that apart, there are not many movies that have good enough recall value which were released in December during the last decade or so.

2010 is all set to change that trend. Just look at the jostle for space in December. One can be forgiven for thinking that Diwali is yet to arrive. Yes, this Diwali had just one star offering (Uthamaputhiran). But, December is all set to upstage even Diwali, with a bevy of releases. Looks like the lack of star power for Diwali will be more than compensated by the spate in December. Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Suriya, Arya, Jeyam Ravi etc. are all lined up and waiting. It looks like Decemeber might end up having more than one big release a week.

The biggest of them all is without doubt Manmadhan Ambu (the title of the movie and the way it has been shown in trailers implies that it is not about the literal translation – ‘Cupid’s Arrow’, but rather about Man-Madhan and Ambu, the three characters. Well, a guess can be ventured at this stage; Kamal Haasan’s character is called Manohar or Manoj or any other name that begins with ‘Man’. Maddy plays Madan while Trisha is Ambu which might stand for Ambika or Ambujam etc... The title definitely is reminiscent of Michael Madana Kama Rajan which also came from Kamal’s pen). Then of course there is Vijay’s Kaavalan. Well, the star certainly needs a hit now and has teamed up with the man who gave him one of the biggest hits in his career – Friends. But, thick competition will not make it easy for Vijay to find the bull’s eye at the box office. Suriya’s Bollywood launch vehicle Raktha Charithra has reportedly moved on from the last week of November to the next month. It will be really interesting to watch how RGV (the master of intensity, strange camera angles, gangsters and close-ups) portrays Suriya. We will be in for a whole new experience with the star.

Arya will be looking to sign off 2010 on a very high note with Chikku Bukku. He has had a tremendous run so far with Madhrasapattinam and Boss Engira Bhaskaran being appreciated by all classes of audience. With Chikku Bukku he seems to be returning to the romantic young guy mould and going by the momentum that he holds at present, it is going to be hard to stop him. Meanwhile, Shreya too will be hoping that the movie brings a turnaround for her fortunes in Kollywood. Jeyam Ravi might just make his presence felt in December with Engeyum Kaadhal which also sees Prabhu Deva as director for the first time since the Villu debacle. And, there are also talks about the possibility of Dhanush making it two releases in as many months with Aadukalam being slated for release soon. Sun Pictures are not known to hang around too long and are also not wary of competition, especially with the kind of marketing force that they command. Yes, it is a genuine chance that Dhanush may find himself in a bit of a quandary with Aadukalam stopping the flow of Uthamaputhiran. That apart, the movie will be closely watched because of the promise that was shown by its director on his debut- Polladhavan. Can the Dhanush-Vettrimaran team create magic again?

Well, these are just the major flicks lined up. There might be quite a few more that are willing to hit screens during December. Well then, what is the reason for the exponential number of films queued up for the next month? Remember, it is not just December that is crowded; even November has been very active during and post-Diwali. The reason is perhaps too easy to fathom; Superstar. The virtual dominance held by Endhiran over the box office for a three week to one month period meant that many other movies had to wait for their chance to get into theaters without being run over. It is perhaps this backlog of releases during October that has caused the ‘December bottleneck of 2010’. Of course, we are not claiming that all movies listed above are sure shot December releases. Looking at the number and star power of the movies, it is quite likely that some of them may push towards Pongal which will possibly cause another bottleneck for the harvest festival. Tamil cinema at the moment is facing ‘problems of prosperity’. Let the good times continue.

Hariharan Does Music for Chikku Bukku

Watch Chikku Bukku Tamil Movie Online at http://watchmoviechannel.com

Hariharan and Lesle Lewis of Colonial Cousins speak to Chitra Swaminathan about the high notes of their 14-year-long association
Rewind to 1989: Hari meets Lesle. They do jingles. Hariharan sings and Lesle Lewis composes and arranges music. Their musical brand equity is established. A delayed script marks a tuneful twist. Once, while waiting for a script to arrive, Hari starts humming a tune. Lesle joins in and those in the studio cheer excitedly at the impromptu jugalbandi. It sets the two thinking — why not make music together?
1992: Hari and Lesle record a tape and take it to a friend in Magnasound. He is thrilled with the funky and refreshing fusion. Meanwhile, Hari on a trip to London, visits Khusro, a good old dost, who tells him how his (Khusro's) Indian friends there call themselves colonial cousins. Hari immediately rings up Lesle in India and suggests christening their musical relationship thus. An excited Lesle agrees readily.
1994: They produce their first album ‘Colonial Cousins'.
1996: Launch of ‘Colonial Cousins'. The album scales up charts and increases their bandwidth. It wins the MTV Asia Viewers' Choice Award and the U.S. Billboard's Viewers' Award.
Now, fast forward.
Live shows, recordings and film music direction — they are on a musical overdrive. “Chikku Bukku”, the second Tamil film (the first was “Modhi Vilayadu”) for which they've composed music is ready for release, while yet another Colonial Cousins album is awaiting completion.
United they win, and they do so independently too. As a playback singer, Hari's always on a lilting song (“Roja” was the turning point, and A.R. Rahman raised the bar for him with every composition). Besides, his ishq with sher-shayari continues.
Lesle, in his new studio in Mumbai, is busy creating content, promoting promising freshers, roping in talented seniors seeking opportunities and doing pop shows (he rocked the Indi-pop world with his super hit compositions for singers such as Suneeta Rao and KK. His remixes, especially those featuring the inimitable Asha Bhosle, were tributes to the original R.D. Burman tracks.)
“‘What next? What next?' one keeps asking oneself. So does everyone around. Artistes cannot work with an agenda. Of course, like other musicians we want to be always heard… more in people's minds and souls. That's where a tune should rest to be alive,” says Hariharan. Lesle is quick to add: “Colonial Cousins are free-spirited artistes, who want the audience to let their guard down when listening to music that is replete with interesting layers and emotions.”
Why is it that they have not been able to recreate the same magic in their music for films? “In films, we have to do songs that move with the screenplay. They should also suit the actors on whom they would be picturised. This genre of music has its own parameters. We need to follow them,” explains Lesle.
“It's nice to hear people still hum ‘Krishna nee begano baro' (the chart-scorching track from their debut album). We obviously cannot make every song sound that way. Even our next album will sound different. We try to bring the same musical influences to every project we do; the approach is the same,” says the vivacious Hariharan.
The 55-year-old singer is ever-geared up for fresh challenges, backed by a deep, resonant and youthful voice. He is now enjoying his tryst with television. His music reality show “Hariyudan Naan” (Jaya TV) is grabbing many eyeballs.
“Reaching out through various media is as exciting as dabbling in a range of musical pitches. I am rediscovering myself while interacting with the youngsters participating in the show,” he smiles.
As for Lesle, he is upbeat about being on the jury of the Global Indian Music Awards (GIMA) that were given away recently. “This is the first time we have an annual award exclusively for Indian music and to create global recognition for Indian musicians. It's nice to see music bodies, maestros and enthusiasts coming together for it,” he says.
Fourteen years after they entered the music scene together, the Cousins continue to hit the high notes. And, even in today's sonic boom, have fans whose hearts beat for their interludes. Something that's easy to achieve if musicians are tuned to their roots. And, that's something the Cousins do with panache.

Someone's loss is another's gain. And this is exactly what happened when Vidya Balan failed to give her dates for an upcoming Tamil movie Chikku Bukku. Debutante Preeta Rao, sister of Bollywood actress Amrita Rao, was roped in after Vidya walked out from Manikandan's project.

Preeta says that debuting in a film which is being directed Manigandan is a dream come true for her. She has enjoyed working with Manikandan's team and now she is eagerly awaiting for the release of the film, says the actress.

She was a model and had also been involved with a Mumbai-based magazine for which she used to write columns on Bollywood films and actors. The girl confirms that it was her profile picture from the magazine’s column, which initially drew the attention of Manikandan to approach her for the role in Chikku Bukku.
